RELATIONS BETWEEN the Catholic Church and the Government have been up and down in recent months. There was the row over welfare triggered by Cardinal Vincent Nichols’ remarks, followed by the spectre of Communities Secretary Eric Pickles cancelling his attendance at the consistory where the cardinal received his red hat. Things seemed to look up when the Home Secretary, Theresa May, attended a human-trafficking conference in Rome organised by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, and the Prime Minister, David Cameron, reached out to the Churches over Easter with positive remarks about Christianity.
