Vestments and shades


 
The Archbishop of Dublin paid his own tribute to Popes John Paul II and John XXIII at Mass last weekend. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin wore the same vestments worn by John Paul when he celebrated Mass at Phoenix Park in 1979 attended by over a million people. It was the first time the vestments had been used since that occasion. At a special Mass in Dublin’s Pro-Cathedral on Sunday to mark the canonisations of the two popes, Archbishop Martin also used the chalice from the Phoenix Park liturgy. That chalice was originally a gift to Pope Pius XI from the people of Ireland following the 1932 Eucharistic Congress. In 1961, however, Pope John XXIII decided to send the chalice back to Ireland for the Patrician year, marking 1,500 years of devotion to St Patrick in the country. The archbisho
