Pet Shop altar boy


 
He may be a lapsed Catholic, but Neil Tennant, of the pop duo Pet Shop Boys, has worked religious references into his music over the years. His days as an altar boy came to the fore in his number-one hit “It’s a Sin” – a description of his time at St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School in Newcastle – with the Latin Confiteor worked into the end of the song. Now Tennant has produced his own version of the old spiritual hymn “Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)?” Many will remember Johnny Cash’s recording of the song, accompanied by guitar, backing vocals and strings, but Tennant’s interpretation is a pared-down, rhythm-driven rendition that one fan describes as “industrial hymn techno”.
