It is not only bishops’ living arrangements that are being examined afresh under Francis’ pontificate, following his decision to live in a Vatican guesthouse rather than the apostolic palace. A priest in Gorton, Manchester, one of the most socially deprived areas of England, has just unveiled “plans for the presbytery in the spirit of Pope Francis”, a redesign of the 1907 property that was built to house three priests and two housekeepers. Fr Andrew Stringfellow, in charge of the appropriately named Sacred Heart and St Francis of Assisi parish, has announced plans to radically change the house to benefit the community he serves.
