Pope Francis was due to leave the Vatican on Maundy Thursday to wash the feet of those on the margins of society. The venue for the ceremony was Centro Santa Maria della Provvidenza (Our Lady of Providence), an institution on the outskirts of Rome that cares for the disabled and elderly, which is near to the young offenders’ institution – Casa del Marmo – which he visited last year to wash the feet of 12 prisoners, two of them women. The Santa Maria centre is run by the Don Carlo Gnocchi Foundation. Blessed Don Carlo was a Milanese priest and army chaplain who set up a charity for children injured during the Second World War.
