LAST MONTH we reported that Stations of the Cross would be on display on the London Underground thanks to the public art enterprise Art Below. Now Transport for London (TfL) has deemed eight of the images unsuitable to be shown on billboards at Tube stations. Among those rejected are Antony Micallef’s Kill Your Idol – three pieces showing Jesus standing before a television talent show panel – and Sebastian Horsley’s The Crucifixion, in which the artist is being nailed to a cross. Another, Zavier Ellis’ The Covenant, was refused because it includes a small amount of graffiti-style lettering, which falls foul of a ban on anything that suggests an advert has been defaced, and Paul Fryer’s Black Pietà which depicts Christ in an electric chair.
