WHEN Pope Francis was first shown those spacious papal apartments (the ones he rejected for a modest Vatican guest house), he is reported to have exclaimed, “But there is room here for 300 people.” So it was perhaps unfortunate that the Archbishop of Atlanta’s spokeswoman justified the US$2.2 million (£1.3m) spent on his residence by saying that he “entertains up to 300 people at his gatherings”. Archbishop Wilton Gregory has since decided to sell the property.This incident – and the frugal lifestyle of Pope Francis – have turned the spotlight on American bishops’ residences.
