Frost and the cardinal


 
Sir David Frost’s memorial service at Westminster Abbey was full of VIPs including the Prince of Wales, former Prime Minister Sir John Major and actress Joanna Lumley among those in attendance. Also on the guest list was Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor who, when he was Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, got to know the famous broadcaster. Sir David was married to Lady Carina Fitzalan-Howard, daughter of the 17th Duke of Norfolk. In 1981, to celebrate the silver jubilee of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, a cricket match took place between the Duke of Norfolk’s XI and the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton’s XI at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground. I wholeheartedly agree. Theology is not about “learning the teachings of the Church”, it’s literally the science of God, and comprises different types: biblical, historical, systematic, and practical. As regards studying various theologians, I’ve found it helpful not necessarily to read the writings of the theologians themselves (Karl Rahner for example is notoriously difficult) but to read ABOUT them. Don’t confine your studies to Catholic theologians only, I’ve found Tom Wright (former Bishop of Durham) and David Wilkinson (scientist and Thought For The Day contributor) particularly fascinating.
