The Tridentine Rite holds a unique appeal to gay Catholics, according to an article in the Latin Mass Society’s in-house journal. Laurence England, who describes himself as “a Catholic who has long-term experience of same-sex attraction”, says the old form of the liturgy has an appealing beauty. “Incense, the priest facing east, the Latin, the chant, the careful following of rubrics – these are all to aid worship and adoration and to glorify God,” he writes in the latest edition of Mass of Ages. “These things of beauty are only there to point towards He who is Beauty – and all beauty in this Mass is servant of the Beautiful One, the Lord. This is why the Latin Mass draws men who suffer the wound of homosexuality …” England goes
