HE HAS OFTEN travelled to Liverpool wearing red, the colours of Liverpool Football Club of which he is an avid supporter. Tomorrow, Vincent Nichols will return to his home diocese yet again wearing red, but this time that of a cardinal. Cardinal Nichols is to celebrate Mass at the city’s Metropolitan Cathedral, the mother church of the diocese where he grew up and spent the early years of his priesthood.The dean of the cathedral, Canon Anthony O’Brien, said they were expecting to reach the cathedral’s capacity of 2,500. The city of Liverpool is also clearly proud of its new cardinal. He appears on the top 100 “greatest Merseysiders of all time” as voted for by readers of the Liverpool Echo.
