Economic women


 
THIS WEEK Pope Francis named the members of his new finance body that will oversee Vatican budgets. There is no space, however, for women on the Council for the Economy, which includes seven laymen and eight cardinals. So which female candidates might be considered to sit on such a body?The most obvious is Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund. Brought up a Catholic, in October 2012 she accepted an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. Another possibility is Ana Patricia Botín, the Spanish-born chief executive of Santander UK, who was educated at the Catholic boarding school St Mary’s Ascot in Berkshire.
