LAST WEEK, we reported on the signature gin-based cocktail of the English College in Rome, which was served at a party to celebrate Archbishop Vincent Nichols becoming a cardinal. Not to be outdone, the Friends of Westminster Cathedral will be providing a celebratory “Red hat cocktail” at a reception in the cathedral hall on 14 May. Asked about its ingredients, a spokeswoman for the Friends remained tight-lipped. “The recipe is top secret until we’ve had a practice run,” she said. Ingredients might include Campari, grenadine and cranberry juice and it could be topped with a cherry or strawberry on a cocktail stick to symbolise the red hat.
