Clerical error?


 
MALE-DOMINATED guest lists are a fact of life in the Vatican. But eyebrows were raised when the British Embassy to the Holy See hosted a dinner for the Archbishop of Westminster last week in honour of him being made a cardinal, at which no women at all were present.Of the 33 there, only two – the ambassador and his deputy – were laypeople. Thirteen cardinals and two cardinal-designates from five continents attended, along with some bishops, senior Vatican officials and other clergy. No invites, therefore, to Lady (Carla) Powell, whose husband, Lord (Charles) Powell, was Lady Thatcher’s foreign policy adviser, or to Cherie Blair, who were both in Rome for the consistory, or indeed to Sr Helen Alford, dean of the faculty of social sciences at the Angelicum university.The B
