The Catholic University of La Plata has said it wholeheartedly supports Archbishop Héctor Aguer who condemned as “abominable” the filming of a promotional gay video in the city cathedral.
The video shows a gay activist transvestite and a Peruvian singer known as “Tigress of the Orient”, dressed in a skimpy leopard skin outfit. The pair dance and sing in the cathedral aisles, kneel for confession and adapt lines from prayers for their lyrics. They declare themselves “goddesses of sexual desire” and “believers in our Lord Jesus Christ”. The video was made surreptitiously to promote a gay bar in La Plata.
Following a homily on the matter Archbishop Aguer was widely reported as declaring homosexuality “an abomination”, triggering protests and an official complaint against him from Argentina’s National Anti-Discrimination Institute. He has since released a statement clarifying the words of his homily.
"What happened in the cathedral was extremely serious and I described it as abominable,” he wrote. “They made a parody of confession and the Eucharist. The woman – who they tell me was really a man – sang blasphemous songs of an erotic nature on the Body of Christ.”
The Catholic University said last week that the archbishop’s original homily had been distorted. Its council thanked him for “the courage and wisdom of his words in the face of the desecration of our cathedral”.
