Cordileone defends American March for Marriage

The House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi joined the lobbying effort against Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone this week, urging him not to attend the “March for Marriage” today.

Archbishop Cordileone is due to speak at the March, which is being held to support a Catholic understanding of marriage as between one man and one woman.

The Catholic politician characterised the march as "venom masquerading as virtue."

Archbishop Cordileone said he would still be joining in the demonstration. In a letter to sixteen public officials including Senator Mark Leno, who represents the 11th Senate District of California, and the heads of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) groups, he said that he had a responsibility to defend Catholic teaching on marriage.

He said that the March was not anti-homosexuality, one of the claims made by people who oppose it, adding that violence towards gay people “is to be deplored and eradicated.”

“Please do not make judgments based on stereotypes, media images and comments taken out of context. Rather, get to know us first as fellow human beings,” he said. “I myself am willing to meet personally with any of you not only to dialogue, but simply so that we can get to know each other. It is the personal encounter that changes the vision of the other and softens the heart.”
