A film celebrating the special bond between mothers and their children with Down’s syndrome has been viewed over a million times.
Produced for World Down’s Syndrome Day on 21 March, the film features 50 mums in the car with their four-year-olds singing and signing to Christina Perri’s multi-platinum selling lovesong ‘A Thousand Years’.
The families, based across the UK, recorded short clips in the style of celebrity comedian James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, which one of the fathers then turned into a film.
Corden tweeted the video to his 10.3m followers and it has now garnered over 600,000 views on YouTube and over one million on Facebook
Singer Christina Perri, who became a mother for the first time in January, gave her permission for the song to be used and supported the track, saying on Twitter: “I’m so honored they chose my song! My heart is so full!!!”
One of the mothers featured said they came up with the idea after seeing videos by the group Singing Hands who do nursery rhymes in Makaton - a form of sign language.
The hashtag #Wouldn’tChangeAThing accompanied messages sharing the film over the weekend.
Angela Miu, 44, appears in the film with her toddler and told Huffington Post that she took part in the project to help change attitudes towards Down’s Syndrome.
“The UK has a 90 per cent termination rate for babies diagnosed with Down’s syndrome in the womb,” she said. “I want people to know having a child with Down’s syndrome isn’t scary; in fact it is a wonderful adventure; full of joy, love and yes some challenges, just like having any typical child.
“I think the video is so powerful because it is just a group of mummies and children getting together to have some fun signing along to a song. We all have something in common which bonds us together. We wouldn’t change our children but we want to change the world for our children.”
