The French bishops will host President Emmanuel Macron and 300-400 guests from civil society and Catholic life on 9 April for an evening of dialogue on issues facing French society.
The event, to be held in the medieval Collège des Bernardins conference centre, copies similar meetings sponsored by the country’s minority Jewish, Muslim and Protestant communities.
It amounts to an admission the Church needs to present its views more publicly in a multi-religious and widely secularised society. “We’re often told that one doesn’t hear the voice of the Church enough,” said Archbishop Georges Pontier, head of the Bishops’ Conference. “In many areas, society is searching for direction. In this context, this evening could be the occasion for a dialogue.”
