Officials from various UK government departments and the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, met on Tuesday in the Jordanian capital, Amman, to discuss a complaint made by Lord Alton and others that the scheme to offer refugee places to Syrians has accepted too few Christians.
Only 64, or 1.5 per cent, of the 4,175 Syrians accepted between 5 September 2015 and September 2016 were Christian. Before Syria’s civil war began in 2011, Christians made up 10 per cent of the population. The Home Office declined to comment on the meeting but a spokesperson said: “Our scheme will prioritise the most vulnerable refugees.”
