Thousands turn out to pay respect to Dolores O'Riordan

Thousands of people have been paying their respects to the late Cranberries lead singer Dolores O'Riordan as the funeral details were announced for this week.

RTE reported that thousands of fans turned to pay their respects to the singer at the public reposal today, Sunday afternoon, at Saint Joseph’s Church in O’Connell Avenue Limerick.

There will also be a reposal at Cross’s Funeral Home in Ballyneety, Co Limerick, tomorrow, Monday 22 January, from 4.00pm followed by removal at 8.00pm to Saint Ailbe’s Church, Ballybricken.

Fr James Walton, Parish Priest of Ballybricken & Bohermore in Co Limerick said the funeral mass will take place in the Church of Saint Ailbe, Ballybricken, at 11.30am on Tuesday 23 January followed by a private family burial. The Mass will be broadcast live by Limerick FM Radio.

Chief celebrant of the Requiem Mass will be Canon Liam McNamara, associate pastor and the retired parish priest, who is a close friend of the O’Riordan family.  Chief con-celebrants will be Father James Walton PP, of Ballybricken and Bohermore, Archbishop Kieran O'Reilly, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly and Archbishop Dermot Clifford, Archbishop Emeritus of Cashel and Emly.

Fr Walton emphasised that because  the church has a limited capacity of only 200 places, attendance is strictly reserved for extended family and close friends. The church yard covers a small area and is also private property.

Bishop of Limerick Brendan Leahy has described her death as a "sad loss of a young and precious life".

He said in a statement to the Limerick Leader: “Millions across the world have been shocked by this sad news but first and foremost I think of her family. Way beyond anything else, this is the passing of a loving mother, daughter and sister. This is a family that will grieve deeply for Dolores in the same as others who lose loved ones. It starts and ends with them.

“Of course she was a superstar and an inspiration to so many people, not least from Limerick. She grew up in Ballybricken, which is actually in the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly, but Limerick city, all of Limerick, held her very dear in its heart.

“Her rise to stardom gave a huge amount of belief to young people locally at the time.  She was a true child of Limerick; talented, honest, full of soul and courageous. And she never lost sight of who she was and where she was from.

“She also often spoke about her spirituality and how important that was too her and, of course, she met Pope John Paul II. She spoke of taking a lot of influence for her music from her spirituality. Limerick and the world has lost a kind, soft-hearted, talented soul. May she rest in peace.”

O'Riordan died last Monday in London in a hotel in Park Lane at the age of 46. Her death is not being treated as suspicious. In the 1990s her band, The Cranberries, had hits such as Linger and Zombie. She had been in London for a recording session.
