Lincoln wins #CathedralsWorldCup

Lincoln Cathedral voted the nation's favourite in a poll on Twitter

Lincoln has been voted the nation's favourite cathedral in the #cathedralsworldcup on Twitter.

More than 27,000 people voted in the contest, with Lincoln narrowly beating York Minster for first place with both getting around 33 per cent of the vote, Durham was third with 26 per cent and Bristol fourth with eight per cent.

Organiser Ben Brock told BBC News: "I'm an architecture nerd, and I'd been reading up on various cathedrals and am always looking for ways to shout about architecture on Twitter. On a whim I checked how many there were and it turns out England and Wales has 48 (Anglican, that is), which is a good number for the world cup format that Twitter does so well - so it sort of suggested itself to me."

Catholic cathedrals do not currently take part in the contest. However, one source told The Tablet there might possibly be a chance this could change if the contest runs again next year.

And at least one Catholic cathedral has told The Tablet they would be keen to take part.

Rowan Morton-Gledhill, press secretary to Bishop of Leeds Marcus Stock, said: "I’ve never been to any Mass at Leeds Cathedral that wasn’t at least well-attended -if not standing-room only. But one of the most moving sights I ever saw wasn’t even on our own ‘hallowed turf’; a Mass celebrated by Bishop Marcus and kindly hosted by our friends at Ripon Cathedral during the Year of Mercy played to what one might call ‘a capacity crowd’ of well over 1,300 Catholics.

"And similar numbers turned out again this year on a weekday in term time!’

"We wouldn’t be averse to joining in a Cathedrals World Cup for a bit of friendly competition. In fact, with a full, sung choral Mass every weekday, we’re strong contenders when it comes to worshipping the Lord in the beauty of holiness: we have a stunning, neo-Gothic, Arts and Crafts building; our Liturgy and Music is always of the highest quality; both our children’s choirs and our congregations reflect the wonderful diversity of the Universal Church – and of course, there’s absolutely nothing that can compete with the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament!"
