Everyday lives of Benedictine monks depicted in new BBC series

Everyday lives of Benedictine monks depicted in new BBC series

A new BBC series will depict the everyday lives of Benedictine Monks in three British monasteries.

The three-part series, 'Retreat: Meditations from the Monastery', aired on Channel 4, aims to create a feeling of restfulness and quiet contemplation. Following monks in Downside, Belmont, and Pluscarden Abbeys, the series does not have a narrator or soundtrack so viewers can experience prayers, or garden sounds.

The first episode, aired on Tuesday 24 October, is filmed in Downside Abbey in Somerset, and follows two monks - Father Christopher and Father Michael - as they bake sourdough bread and design furniture respectively.
