It is not possible simply to sit out the rift between the fiercest critics of Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia and its most committed defenders, nor to solve the dispute “with a knockout blow”, the former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), Cardinal Gerhard Müller, told the German Tagespost.
The theological and pastoral problems would have to be solved objectively and “with an advance of trust”, Müller said. “We can neither shake the indissolubility of marriage nor can we remain inactive pastorally in the face of the many marriage crises. Somehow both concerns are right. Some put a stop sign in front of a dangerous chasm, while others are already trying to build bridges over it. Both are necessary on the path to salvation.”
