Faith issues increasingly common in the workplace

Issues concerning religion in France are now commonplace at work and the number of actual conflicts – although a minority of cases – is rising, according to a new report on problems concerning expressions of faith in the workplace.

Two thirds of French managers queried in the annual survey said that they encountered various manifestations of faith at work, such as wearing clothes linked to a certain religion or asking for time off to pray. One-third of them said this was frequent.

Outright conflicts over manifestations of faith make up only 7.5 per cent of all cases recorded this year, a figure that has risen from 6.7 per cent last year, the survey by the Observatory of Religion at Work (OFRE) and the Randstad consulting group said.

Wearing a hijab, a cross or other religious object was the most frequent manifestation of faith at work, followed by requests for breaks for religious practices and men refusing to work with women; 16 per cent of such issues needed a senior manager to be resolved.
