Game of Thrones actor, Jonathan Pryce, is to play Pope Francis in a new Netflix drama while highly acclaimed actor Anthony Hopkins will take on the role of Benedict XVI.
The film – ‘The Pope’ - is to focus on events surrounding the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the subsequent election of Francis.
Brazilian filmmaker, Fernando Meirelles, (best known for directing award-winning films such as ‘City of God’ and ‘The Constant Gardener’) will direct the film, which is based on a screenplay by Anthony McCarten (‘The Theory of Everything.’)
‘The Pope’ will begin filming in Argentina in November, and according to reports, will portray Francis as not wanting to be made Pope, along with depicting his humility and dedication to the poor.
The drama follows the successful HBO series ‘The Young Pope’, starring Jude Law, which told the story of Pius XIII's pontificate. Directed by Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino every episode of the series was viewed by an estimated 4.7 million people.
