In the first change to the main sainthood requirements in centuries, Pope Francis has declared that those who give their lives for others out of love and charity and not only because of their faith can be beatified.
The Vatican announced on Tuesday that Francis has issued Maiorem Hac Dilectionem, a motu proprio outlining the new route, which stipulates that a miracle must be attributed to the candidate’s intercession prior to beatification – which is not the case with martyrs killed out of “hatred for the faith”.
