Havana’s suppression of Christians denounced

Members of the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL) have denounced ongoing repression of Christians by the Cuban Government, writes Martha Pskowski.

Activist Irán Almaguer published on the organisation’s website that its members continue to be targeted by the  authorities due to its “One Cuban, One Vote” campaign. MCL national coordinator Eduardo Cardet Concepción has been imprisoned since being detained on 30 November 2016.

The MCL was founded by Catholic activist Oswaldo Payá. The “One Cuban, One Vote” campaign seeks to modify the electoral law to allow for open elections. Mr Almaguer said that he was detained for questioning on his way home from Mass in the province of Las Tunas.

“The persecution is daily. I was detained returning home from church last Sunday with my wife and daughter. My house was inspected by state security agents. They took me to Holguín, where I was detained for several hours,” he wrote on the MCL website on 8 February.
