Baroness Shirley Williams among Catholics named in New Year Honours List

Catholic politician and academic Baroness Shirley Williams is set to receive one of the highest accolades in the New Year Honours list.

Baroness Williams, 86, who led the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords from 2001-2004, stepped down as a peer earlier this year after 50 years in politics. She has been recognised for her service to political and public life with a Companion of Honour.

The Order of the Companions of Honour is limited to 65 people at any one time and includes the likes of Stephen Hawking, Dame Judi Dench and George Osborne.

Commenting on her award, Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat leader, said Williams was a hero of his and a “liberal lion”.

“Shirley is also an inspiration for female politicians across the world. She is a trailblazer who has shown girls, like my own, that they can do anything they want to with skill, determination and passion.”

Among her many achievements, Williams was responsible for extending the comprehensive school system in Britain while Education Secretary.

MBEs have also been awarded to Sr Rose Devlin for services to improving community relations in schools in Northern Ireland and Mrs Gillian Walton for services to education.

In total 1,197 people have received an award, with women representing just over 50 per cent.
