A 46-year-old man has been charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with the killing of two nuns in Durant, Mississippi earlier this week.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation detectives decided to charge Rodney Earl Sanders after an extensive interview process.
State investigators said that Sanders, gave his address as Kosciusko, which is a small town about 12 miles east of the home of Sister Paula Merrill, 68, and Sister Margaret Held, 68. The sisters, who both helped patients struggling to pay for their healthcare at nearby Lexington Medical Clinic, were reported missing by concerned colleagues after they failed to turn up for work.
A local police office sent to investigate discovered their bodies and evidence of a robbery.
“Sanders was developed as a person of interest early on in the investigation,” said Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Director Lt. Colonel Jimmy Jordan. “With the cooperation of the Durant and Kosciusko Police Departments, Holmes County Sheriff’s Department and the Attorney General Office this heinous crime has been resolved.”
Sanders is being held in an undisclosed detention centre awaiting his initial court appearance.
CNN reported that the authorities believe the killer took the victims' car, a blue Toyota Corolla, which was later found on an abandoned road less than a mile from their home. But nothing was taken from the house, according to a law enforcement official who has been briefed on the investigation.
