Paris churches asked to welcome Muslims to Mass

The Diocese of Paris has asked its churches to welcome Muslim visitors this Sunday.

The call comes after the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) urged Muslims, imams and community leaders to visit churches for Mass on Sunday to express their solidarity and compassion following the murder of a priest, Fr Jacques Hamel, 84, by terrorists on Tuesday at a church in Normandy.

In a statement on its website the diocese asked parishioners to welcome and accompany those Muslims who wanted to attend Mass.

The message, in French, said it encouraged anything that would allow parishes and local Muslim communities to build links. Doing so, it said, was to respond to the hatred and division sown by the terrorists with dialogue and brotherhood.

Catholics have been asked to remember Fr Jacques during Mass on Sunday.
