Pope Francis has called the Mayor of Nice to express his sorrow for the last week’s terrorist attack later asking one of his adviser’s: “what can I do for you?” The Pope has said he will meet some of the families of those 84 killed last Thursday when an Islamist extremist drove a truck into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day.
On Monday, thousands marked a "moment's" silence on the beachfront in the French city of Nice where an attacker in a lorry killed 84 people on Thursday.
Soon after the Pope spoke with the Mayor, Christian Estrosi, and then got in contact with Paul Celi, President of “Amitiè France-Italie” - a body aimed at building friendship between France and Italy and which has Church links - who is acting as liaison for Estrosi.
“Pope Francis phoned me last night [16.7.16] at around 19.00, excusing himself because he did not speak French well,” Celi explained. “The first thing he said to me was: 'What can I do for you?’ He then promised that he will meet the victims' families soon.”
Yesterday during the Sunday Angelus, the Pope prayed for an end to “terror and death” while mourning the loss of lives in Nice which he pointed out included “many children.”
He said: “I am close to each family and the entire French nation which is in mourning” while offering a “paternal and fraternal embrace for all of Nice's inhabitants and all of France.”
