Cardinal Vincent Nichols today (12 July) congratulated Theresa May on her imminent appointment as Prime Minister, praising her efforts in the fight against human trafficking and her willingness to work with the Catholic Church.
In a letter written to the future Prime Minister, the Archbishop of Westminster said he was “personally delighted” at the appointment of Mrs May.
Recognising her judgement, resolve, sense of justice and integrity, Cardinal Nichols assured Mrs May of his and the prayers of all Catholics in England and Wales. He also looked forward to working with her across a broad range of issues in the service of the common good, he added.
Making reference to Mrs May’s attending the first meeting of the Santa Marta Group – an alliance of bishops and police chiefs from around the world working to eliminate human trafficking - in the Vatican in 2014, Cardinal Nichols said this was evidence of her capacity to use her political position to aid the vulnerable and of her willingness to work with the Catholic church.
Theresa May, who is Britain’s second longest serving Home Secretary in the past 100 years, is a practising Anglican. Her father, Hubert, was a Church of England vicar in East Sussex.
The Home Secretary will take up office as Britain’s second female Prime Minister on Wednesday 13 July, following Mr Cameron’s offering his resignation to the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Mrs May, according to reports, has long harboured leadership hopes.
