A prominent bishop in the central American nation of Belize has urged Catholic schools there to ban groups that oppose church teaching on sexual ethics.
Bishop Dorick Wright of Belize City and Belmopan named a Red Cross programme “Together We Can” and the National Aids Commission, which condone condom use; the gay rights United Belize Advocacy Movement (UNIBAM) and the Belize Family Life Association (BFLA). He said these groups “foster programmes that ultimately undermine our Catholic values”.
He said these organisations’ activities and positions “are actively opposed to the moral teachings of the Catholic Church” the twice-weekly paper Amandala reported.
The letter, dated 3 March, warned against Belize Family Life Association (BFLA) – the Belize arm of pro-choice group Planned Parenthood – which it said proposed an “agenda of sodomy, abortion, and sexual gender redefinition is seeking to radically change Belize’s Christian character.”
In 2010 Belize had the highest incidence of HIV in central America.
Allison Green, Executive Director of the National Aids Commission, warned: “If you don't protect your vulnerable people then the national development of the country cannot be realised.”
