School accepts same-sex dating


Archbishop Denis Hart of Melbourne has urged Catholic schools to be sensitive and respectful to students who wish to bring a same-sex date to formal school events, writes Mark Brolly. The Age daily reported on 22 January a case at the oldest girls’ secondary college in Victoria, the Academy of Mary Immaculate in Fitzroy, where a student started a petition after she was told she couldn’t bring a female partner to the school’s formal dinner. The school changed its mind.

Archbishop Hart said “a relationship in the eyes of the Church is heterosexual” but “these are emotional situations and we [must] always respect the dignity of the human being”.
