Becket relic returns to Canterbury

A relic of St Thomas Becket will arrive in Britain from Hungary later this year in a pilgrimage organised by the Hungarian Embassy, the Church of England and the Catholic Church, writes Elena Curti.

A Baroque reliquary containing part of an arm bone from the martyred Archbishop of Canterbury will be venerated at Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral in May. It will be taken from the basilica at Esztergom, the historic seat of the Hungarian Church, and brought to Westminster Cathedral on 23 May where Mass will be celebrated by the primate of Hungary, Cardinal Péter Erdo, and Cardinal Vincent Nichols. György Balogh, counsellor for religious affairs at the Hungarian Embassy,
said the relic had been in Hungary since the twelfth century and that a
medieval document attested to its provenance.
