Protests against nuclear weapons organised by Catholic peace groups will be held at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and across the country this afternoon to mark Ash Wednesday.
Pax Christi, in addition to its annual protest at the MoD in Whitehall, is holding a vigil outside Blackwell’s bookshop in Liverpool with a focus on the University’s involvement in drone research. Catholic Worker activists in Glasgow are holding a vigil at the Faslane Peace Camp.
At the central London protest, activists will take part in non-violent civil disobedience by daubing the MoD in Whitehall with charcoal that has been blessed, in an echo of the imposition of ashes to mark the start of Lent. The liturgy at the ceremony will also involve prayer and singing.
They are due to process to the MoD from Victoria Embankment Gardens carrying banners saying "Trust in God, not nuclear weapons."
The protests were organised peace groups led by Pax Christi, Fr Martin Newell, a priest with the London Catholic Worker, and Christian CND.
