UK responds with prayer and sorrow

by Rose Gamble

Leaders of the Catholic and Anglican Churches have expressed their sorrow and commitment to pray in the wake of the Paris attacks, writes Rose Gamble.

In a message sent to Cardinal André Vingt-Trois of Paris, Cardinal Vincent Nichols gave his condolences and assured the archbishop of his prayers. He called the killings a “crime against all that true religions hold true”.

Addressing the French community at Notre Dame de France, the French church off Leicester Square in London, the cardinal added: “I pray for all who have died, for those who have been bereaved and traumatised, for the city of Paris as it wakes to a changed world with new challenges for all who believe in peaceful cooperation and constructive engagement.” The President of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, Archbishop Philip Tartaglia also sent a message to the Archbishop of Paris promising to “join with you in prayer, commending to God’s love and mercy all those who were killed, injured, and bereaved”.
