Cardinal Nichols opens Bible Society conference

by Rose Gamble

CARDINAL Vincent Nichols (right) opened the National Catholic Bible Conference in Manchester on Tuesday by reminding all Christians to renew their appreciation of the Bible, writes Rose Gamble.

The three-day conference marks the fiftieth anniversary of one of the most important Catholic documents on the Scriptures, Dei Verbum.

Speaking to biblical scholars and local church leaders from across England and Wales, Cardinal Nichols said: “Dei Verbum encourages all Christians to treasure the pages of Scripture, to learn from them, to pray with them, and to live according to their teaching.”

The conference, a partnership between Bible Society and the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales Scripture Working Group, also included  workshops, seminars and times for prayer.

James Catford, chief executive of Bible Society, said: “As we celebrate together the gift of Scripture on the fiftieth anniversary of Dei Verbum, it is my prayer that all Christians will grow in deeper devotion and attention to the Bible.”
