Cardinal lambasts drugs culture

Cardinal Mario Poli has criticised the Argentine Government for failing to tackle drugs and corruption, writes Isabel de Bertodano.

Referring to a recent scandal in which a senior politician has been accused of running a drugs gang, the cardinal said the country was stuck in a cycle of problems. “We’ve heard, yet again, about drug trafficking, murders and the police force. It has been an enduring theme for many years.”

During an annual pilgrimage Mass at the church of San Cayetano in Buenos Aires, Cardinal Poli said the drugs problem could be blamed on “a capitalist economy which has made money a god”.
