Eco issues to be discussed at forthcoming General Synod

ENVIRONMENTAL issues in the wake of the papal encyclical, look set to feature at the Church of England General Synod meeting in York in a fortnight’s time.

Synod members will be urged to back a motion calling for pressure to be put on world leaders to reach a deal in Paris later this year on limiting carbon dioxide emissions.

Another suggestion tabled by Bishop Nicholas Holtam of Salisbury says dioceses and individual parishes should “encourage prayer and fasting for climate justice on the first day of every month” as well as recommending eco-theology and eco-justice training courses for new clerics.

Synod members will also discuss proposed new regulations to allow the administration of Holy Communion by children.
