Ofsted says Primary fails to teach democracy and ‘different forms’ of families

GOVERNMENT inspectors have criticised a Catholic primary school for failing to teach its pupils enough about the working of democracy, writes Christopher Lamb.

Annecy Catholic Primary School in Seaford, East Sussex, has been told it “requires improvement” by Ofsted. Among the reasons why the school is not rated as “good”, the report states that few pupils understand democracy and that “many are not aware of the different forms that families and adult relationships can take”.

The report does show, however, that the school has improved since 2013 when Ofsted gave it the lowest rating of “inadequate”.

Responding to the points about teaching pupils about democracy Jon Reynard, the head teacher, told the local newspaper, The Argus: “I think that is more like a political agenda of Ofsted where they look at our British values.”

The Government requires schools to teach “British values”, instituted in response to the Trojan Horse affair – the attempt to enforce a hard-line Islamic ethos in some Birmingham schools.
