No Pope can be ‘everybody’s darling’: Gänswein


Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the personal secretary of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, has denied that there are people or groups in the Vatican who are opposed to Pope Francis, writes Christa Pongratz-Lippitt.

“Whoever it is, wherever he comes from, whatever programme he has and whatever his Pontificate is like, there will always be those who are dissatisfied,” Archbishop Gänswein said in an interview on Austrian state television on Easter Sunday. No Pope could be “everybody’s darling”.

There might be the odd person who was “irritated” by Pope Francis, he said, but he did not think it went further than that.

Pope Francis’ key attribute was his “authenticity”, he said.
