Christians slam short-term politics

MOST BRITISH churchgoers believe politicians are fixated on short-term goals, according to a poll organised jointly by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland and Church Action on Poverty, writes Joanna Moorhead.

Results from the poll also showed that more than three churchgoers in four believe their own leaders are not doing enough to challenge political leaders to have a longer-term vision for society.

The poll, of 2,000 people, found 88 per cent agree that British politicians are “more interested in short-term political concerns” than working for a long-term vision for society.

More than three-quarters (78 per cent) say Churches and church leaders “do not effectively challenge politicians” and 90 per cent say they are “more likely to vote for a parliamentary candidate who has a positive long-term vision for society, than one who focuses on short-term concerns”.
