14 mothers die after sterilisation


The Catholic Church in India has joined the chorus of condemnation over shocking deaths from botched sterilisation surgeries at a health camp organised by the health department of Chhattisgarh state in central India, writes Anto Akkara. “This is sad and shocking,” Bishop Paul Toppo of Raigarh Diocese in the state told The Tablet on Tuesday. Fourteen mothers below the age of 32 – most of them illiterate – died and 60 others were hospitalised following the 8 November tubal litigation surgery.
