Fellay rails against Synod on the Family

Bishop Bernard Fellay, head of the traditionalist Society of St Pius X (SSPX), has said nothing good could come of the Synod on the Family, whose first session ended on 19 October, writes Tom Heneghan.

“The gate that is being opened is the gate to hell,” he said in an interview with the SSPX French district. “The prelates who received the keys, that is the power to open the gates of Heaven, are now closing them and opening the gates of hell. It’s incredible! It’s enough to make you scream!”

Bishop Fellay said the synod aimed to “banalise the situation of people living in adultery” and was sure to decide along those lines at its second session next year. “The line has already been determined,” he said.

The SSPX leader also denounced the beatification of the late Pope Paul VI, which took place on the last day of the synod. “They’ve decided that everybody can become a saint, especially if one is pro-Vatican II … this is not serious.”

The bishop made no comment in the interview about recent reports that the Vatican might be ready to create a personal prelature for the SSPX and allow it to continue to reject some aspects of the Second Vatican Council.
