Archbishop accused over wanted chaplain

The Archbishop of Bahía Blanca in Argentina has been charged with protecting an armed forces chaplain accused of crimes against humanity during the last military dictatorship, writes Isabel de Bertodano.

Archbishop Guillermo Garlatti claimed that he did not know Aldo Vara, who was arrested by Interpol in Paraguay earlier this year for his alleged role in the kidnappings, torture and killing of victims apprehended by his army regiment between 1976 and 1983.
Archbishop Garlatti declared in front of a judge this month that he had had no contact with the chaplain, who died on 3 June.
