A memorial prayer vigil for murdered pro-life activist and Focolare member took place last night in a Dublin church last night.
The Pro Life Campaign organised the vigil for 39-year-old Tom O’Gorman, who police found murdered in his house on Sunday.
A 34-year-old Italian man has appeared in court over the murder.
Police were called to Mr O’Gorman’s home in Castleknock in Dublin in the early hours of Sunday morning.
There they discovered the body of Mr O’Gorman, who had been bludgeoned and stabbed to death before being horrifically mutilated.
Officers arrested Mr O’Gorman’s Sicilian lodger, Saverio Bellante, at the scene. Bellante admitted to killing Mr O’Gorman in a dispute over a chess game.
A former journalist, Mr O’Gorman had been working as a researcher for the pro-faith and pro-marriage think tank, the Iona Institute.
He was also involved in the campaign to oppose the introduction of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.
The news of his death and the brutal manner of his killing was greeted with huge grief and shock.
The religious affairs commentator and Iona Institute director, David Quinn, said: “We are all still processing and trying to absorb the death of Tom and the enormity of what happened to him. The circumstances of his death defy description.”
The Pro-Life Campaign said his death was “a huge shock and a painful loss to everyone in the pro-life movement”.
