Plea for release of former prime minister

Ukraine

Catholic and Orthodox church leaders have urged Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovich to meet conditions for a planned November association agreement with the EU by releasing jailed former premier, Yulia Tymoshenko, writes Jonathan Luxmoore.

“Respect for the dignity of the human person, their rights and freedoms, belongs to the evangelical truths that European civilisation is built on,” said Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kiev-Halych, the head of Ukraine’s Greek Catholic Church. “This also applies to individuals whose rights under the European Convention on Human Rights have not been met, among whom the case of Yulia Tymoshenko has special significance.”

* Pope Francis has called on the bishops of Europe to promote a new and sustainable European culture “that joins faith and reason, truth and freedom, in constant harmony”, writes Christa Pongratz-Lippitt. In his message to the Plenary Assembly of the Presidents of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe, in the Slovakian capital Bratislava, Pope Francis called on the assembly to test and challenge European secularism.
