Pope Francis might visit Britain, says foreign secretary

Archbishop Gallagher tells ITV News about the Pope's love of Britain

Archbishop Paul Gallagher has said Pope Francis “certainly might” visit the UK, citing his love of British people and literature.

In an interview with ITV News at the Apostolic Palace on Wednesday, the Pope’s Liverpool-born foreign secretary told news presenter, Julie Etchingham, “never say never” to a papal visit.

“I think he [Pope Francis] has enormous respect for Britain, our traditions," Gallagher added. "He seems to be really quite familiar with our literature for example and I think he likes Britain and the British as far as I can see."

Archbishop Gallagher told ITV he would enjoy showing the pontiff around his hometown in the north of England should he ever set foot on British soil.

In the same interview, the Archbishop was asked whether Britain should stay in the EU, to which he replied: “I think we would see it as being something that is not going to make a stronger Europe. Better in than out”.

Just two Popes have visited the UK in the past, the last official state visit was in 2010 when Pope Benedict XVI spent three days in Scotland and England.
