Luton priest found dead in car after three days

A missing priest from has been found dead in his car in a supermarket car park.

Fr Joseph Williams, 42, is understood to have lain undiscovered in his car outside a supermarket in Houghton Regis, near Luton, for three days from Friday, 27 December.

He was found on Monday slumped over the wheel of his car.

The Bishop of Northampton, Peter Doyle, said the priest had been out on a shopping trip. He added that while there would be a post mortem it appeared Fr Williams had died of natural causes.

Bishop Doyle said: "I think it makes people feel guilty that we didn't look or that we didn't find him, but it was unavoidable and it's just one of those things.”

"Our faith tells us that the Lord's taken him unto himself and we believe that he's sharing the fullness of life in heaven so we've got that hope in our hearts to help us in our sadness."

Fr Williams was ordained in 2000 and was parish priest of St Martin de Porres, Luton. A Mass has been held there in his memory.
