US church creates first Catholic app ahead of Pope visit

The Catholic Church in the US has embraced technology ahead of the visit of Pope Francis this month by launching the first Catholic mobile app.

The app - available in English and Spanish - will include general religious news, readings and local parish news updates alongside detailed coverage of the visit of the Pope.

“This is the most comprehensive virtual connection to the Catholic faith available,” said Bishop Christopher Coyne, chair-elect of the Committee on Communications of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, which created the app.

“We understand many people are looking for more ways to connect with the Church and incorporate Catholic living into their busy lives — that’s exactly what this app is designed to do.”

Additionally, the US Catholic Church app will offer up-to-the minute coverage of Pope Francis addressing a joint session of Congress and the United Nations, as well as the public at the World Meeting of Families. The Pope will visit the United States from 22-27 September.

The app will be available to download in the US only in the Google Play and Apple app stores, though a mobile-ready website is accessible worldwide at usacatholic.church.
